Otters Swimming Club
If you are aged five or over and would like to join our swimming club, visit us at Mercer Hall in Great Harwood on a Wednesday evening between 7pm and 8pm. Alternatively, you can call us to arrange swimming lessons on 01254 884 247 or 01254 351 383.
Our swimming club is a non-profit making organisation and we aim to keep fees to a minimum. We presently have members who swim for the East Lancashire and county teams and also the national England team. The Great Harwood Otters Swimming Club is a testament to the local community who have all contributed in so many ways to achieve such great success. We are proud that our club has given young people an incentive to work hard and reap the well-earned rewards.
Once a local dance hall, Great Harwood swimming pool officially opened in 1967, then in 1968 people from the area initiated an Otters swimming club for young children in the nearby community. The pool has now become the home to the Otters Swimming Club. To begin with, the children’s parents volunteered as instructors until the club increased its numbers. Soon after, they formed a committee which entitled the club to gain amateur status.
It was when a qualified coach was employed that the number of members rose yet again and club nights were introduced four times a week. The dedication and determination of the children was admirable. With the help of their annual enrolment fees and their willingness to support the club by registering with the Amateur Swimming Association, the Otters Swimming Club soon gained regional success and recognition. To date, the club has trained many swimmers who have attained outstanding race times in championships, qualifying them for national events.
As we are a non-profit making organisation, we could not continue without the generosity of the members, their families and the local community. We would like to thank the fundraising committee for their diligence in raising much needed money by organising great fun events.
